Scenic Train Ride: Colombo to Ella
There’s really nothing quite like a few days away from it all – sun bathing on a beach, hot-air ballooning over valleys, or total seclusion, feeling the stress drift away in one of the most scenic hill countries in the world, Sri Lanka.
Possibly one of Mother Nature’s most beautiful creations, Sri Lanka is a varied and scenic country, offering what most travelers would consider the best of both worlds – exploration of its culture and endless stretches of tropical beaches. However, what makes Sri Lanka a truly unique destination is its spectacular scenery – filled with intricate paddy fields, rising mountains, and pounding waterfalls. Consider this your personal invitation to escape into complete serenity.
How Does a 7-Hour Train Ride Sound?
7 hours may seem like a lengthy time to spend on a train while in the midst of your holiday travel. However, when you factor in the undeniable statement, that this is one of the most breathtaking experiences you’ll encounter, it’ll surely be a time well spent. The ride from Kandy to Ella (or the reverse) is incredible!
In order for your journey to live up to this bold statement, there are a few things that must be done in advance:
Ticket purchase: Most trains have different classes to choose from. Select the private AC luxury cabin, which allows you to escape the crowds and have access to a separate observation deck. When selecting your seat, choose the right-hand side – most of the views from Kandy to Ella will be visible right from the comfort of your seat.
It’s important to purchase your tickets in advance. Luxury cabin tickets can be bought via Expo Rail for $13-20USD.
Quick Tips: WiFi is available, however, can be very spotty; There are outlets next to every seat; Food, coffee, and water will be served at regular intervals, however, it’s recommended to walk with your own snacks if you’re a picky eater.
Here are a few moments that will solidify the beauty and serenity of the scenic train ride to Ella!
If you are starting your journey from Colombo, I recommend spending the first night at the Cinnamon Red Colombo – a modern, vibrantly designed hotel in the heart of the city. The following morning, take the first train out from Colombo Fort Station (a quick 20 minute Tuk Tuk ride from the hotel) and begin your adventure to Ella.
The next time you’re in the mood set to escape from the city, be sure to indulge in the Lost Paradise known as Sri Lanka!
P.S. The saying, “The journey is better than the destination” is open for interpretation. In the case of Sri Lanka, it’s fair to declare this match a tie. After your scenic train ride to the south, unwind and enter the relaxing realm of luxury at the 98 Acres Resort in Ella!
